Why should you donate to this DNA project? You don’t have to visit very many websites before you run into one that is asking for donations. So what makes this one different?
First, this site is supporting a very specific, definable activity. You’re not donating to me to help support my way of life, vices or needs… I have a job. And I donate to this effort with my time on the order of several hours a week, the cost of running this website and I donate all the profits from the Gift Shop plus cash donations out of my pocket.
I truly believe the Winslow Family Y-DNA project provides insight to our ancestors that can not be obtained any other way. This insight will be a legacy that we can leave to our children and generations to come. We are the first generation that has the ability to unlock our connection to our ancestors using the science of DNA.
As genealogists we record family history and the relationship to our ancestors. We do this for our own enjoyment and the thought that if we don’t record these histories then they will potentially be lost for future generations. One thing we strive for is to identify, record and confirm as accurately as possible the historical facts and relationships of our family. Y-DNA testing is a tool we now have that lets us confirm the relationships we record are accurate. I believe all of us want to provide the most accurate representation of our family’s history and lineage as possible. DNA testing gives us the ability to do that.
You may ask, why doesn’t everyone just pay for their own testing? Typically, that is how it works in most cases. However, as with any diverse family, our family members have a number of priorities that consume their resources. A person whose test results could be critical to understanding the connection of a family branch may not consider family history as important now as feeding their own family. However, they may be very willing to donate their DNA if the project can cover the testing fees.
This is why we need your help. We have targeted a number of individuals whose results could hold the keys to understanding our lineages. Their family lineage is such that their results will reveal a hidden piece of the genealogy puzzle. As we identify individuals who are these key puzzle pieces, we first appeal to them as to how importance their being tested would be to the whole of the family. Failing that appeal, these key people’s results are too important to the success of our overall understanding of the Winslow ancestry to just give up. We next appeal to them to agree to a Y-DNA test if we can find adequate support to fund their test.
These key people are anonymously listed on our Givers Page with details of what we expect to learn from their test results. The Givers Page allows you to post your contribution to the key member of your choice. You may post your donation to one key family member, several members or the project as a whole. It’s easy to see how your contribution is allowing key pieces of the Winslow ancestry puzzle to be completed.
