Y-DNA Project

Why you should join or support the Winslow Family Y-DNA project.

Over the last several decades genealogist have spent untold hours in county court houses, libraries and musty basements researching our family’s history. A tremendous amount of information has been gathered and recorded. Most of which is very accurate. However, as gaps persisted in the connection of the family tree there has been a tendency to fill in those gaps with speculation and conjecture.

Unfortunately, in many cases as the family’s history continues to be recorded the speculation has become mixed with the facts to the point it’s almost impossible to tell fact from conjecture. With the recent information age the problem has been compounded by the easy access to both accurate and unfounded information and the ease in which this information can be redistributed as fact.  Just one search of just one genealogy database on the internet can produce thousands of hits with varying results.

Here's the Proof

A recent search at www.rootsweb.com for Edward Winslow, born 1595 produced over 850 matches with hundreds of historical record variations (try it yourself!). Governor Edward Winslow, Sr. was among the signers of the Mayflower Compact; the one who selected Plymouth as the place of settlement; one of the principal leaders of the struggling colony, and it's third governor. One of the best documented Winslow ancestors, yet incorrect information on his genealogy is prevalent.

The goal of the Winslow Family Y-DNA project is to use the science of DNA to validate the family relationships. By using the DNA results to corroborate genealogy records we can be assured that we have the best record possible. For DNA to provide the most value we need representatives from as many of the various branches as possible. As each branch of the family obtains DNA results another piece of the family puzzle is put into place.

We need your support in both joining the testing effort and providing monetary support for those who can not afford it. To join the endeavor you must be a male with a Winslow surname to be able to take the Y-DNA test. If you meet these criteria please review and fill out the Registration form.

If you would like to sponsor someone, take a look at the potential candidates and decide which one you would like to help in our Sponsorship Program.
